Case Study: Handling Derrick Case

Laurie was informed about the two complaints that the GAO received from the Turkington family. Discrimination and how the CW is handling Derrick case, they believe that the CW Hood River Office is breaking the law and rules.

Regarding the discrimination complaint, Laurie stated the problem is that Mr Alan Turkington Sr is using Marijuana and has anger temper. The CW workers were not able to determine how safe those two issue would be for the child. Mr. Turkington Sr is not cooperating with assessments.

Regarding how the CW is handling his case, stated that is very difficult to have the Turkington family engaged on a safety plan no matter how many times their CW caseworker, CW Supervisor Laurie, and Program Manager Linda have met with the family. Laurie stated all those attempts have failed because the family became angry very easily and the meetings became unproductive.

I informed Laurie that when I spoke with both, Alan Jr and Derrick, they expressed the following complaints:

Derrick was informed about the court hearing held on 09/19/16 just two hours in advance. Laurie said that happened because in some Counties and small towns, they are informed of the court hearing schedule the same day. There is nothing that CW can do to

He stated that never had any legal problem no DUII, why Jodi is questioning him. Laurie stated that as his father marijuana issues, the CW caseworker were not able to assess and identify safety threats, and conditions for return. Those safety concerns were not addressed because the family is not cooperating. Laurie stated that the CW office is willing to work around those issues and the family are welcome to participate, but it needs to be in a respectful meaner. As of today, all meetings ended up being very reproductive because the family became angry, yelling and extremely argumentative. So the CW workers cannot assess or do a home
