Mr Mooney is an 83 year old man with underlying health issues and has recently moved into a new flat having previously lived with his daughter.
I will consider relevant and applicable theories and legislation in order to reflect on the issues which are relevant to older people from the information given. However, as a social worker it is important that we see Mr Mooney as a unique individual with his own life history (Thompson, 2012), these stages of development offer only a theoretical guiding point and require further interpretation to gain an understanding of the situation, in doing so we take an holistic view of the individual and further promote anti-oppressive practice.

He may be feeling very lonely having moved into his new flat by himself after having previously lived with his daughter. Even though his daughter has health problems herself and can no longer provide support for her father, Mr Mooney may have feelings of resentfulness and in turn can be damaging to their relationship. He also may be feeling like he has lost his independence as he can no longer carry out the daily tasks that he used to as well as becoming dependant on his support worker. This could be frustrating for him and could have a significant impact on his self-esteem as he may feel useless and worthless. Even though he may feel himself that he needs help and support he may be embarrassed to disclose this and may be in denial as he may have a fear of his complete independence being taken away from …show more content…
I also identify my concerns about my ability to try and understand the difficulties in his life as I am a young girl and have not experienced his situation. I will not go in and pretend that I know it all, I will be open and honest with him and tell him that I have not personally experienced the situation and so I cannot completely relate to how is may be feeling but if he can be open and honest with me I can have a better concept on his feelings and circumstances. By doing this I will not deliberately oppress or discriminate against him and hopefully be able to build a good rapport with him. It is important that I work in partnership with Mr Mooney in order to check if information being gathered is valid and not assume that it is correct (Parrott, 2006). In order to help do this I will make him feel comfortable and feel that it is not an interview but a sincere conversation with him. I will do this through body language, eye contact and through asking open and appropriate questions making sure to give him time to think and answer them. There may be silences in doing this which I would find awkward but giving him the time to think I can obtain the vital information I need (Coulshed & Orme 2012). Also through the use of summarisation and clarification of information with him he knows that I am listening to what he is
