This concept of love passion becoming a compulsive behavior has increased in interest over centuries. Although this is so the concept of love addiction has never undergone methodical study. Much of this lacking in study is partially contributed to the fact there are no universal, recognized defining or diagnostic criteria. Clinical/non-systematic research suggests brain mechanisms, social attachments, and mass media as mechanisms for mediating love addiction, similar to those of substance addiction. A consequence is that little is known about formulation, gender impacts, family and societal implications, treatment, child welfare involvements or social work practice guidelines. Surprisingly love addiction is under researched yet research regarding sex addiction has been increasing at a fastened pass due to media, and societal influences. At present, scientific evidence is non-satisfactory to place “love addiction” in any official diagnostic classification, or to label it as a behavioral addiction. The answer of whether addiction is truly an addiction cannot be answered with certainty with contemporary research and therefore invokes further research is necessary. Research for love addiction has be from the standpoint of addictive-though behavior pattern, compulsive behavior, or romantic and love passion that become misdirected (Sussman, 2010). Explaining love addiction from these approaches of study mean it may overlap with personality disorder, substance abuse, a traumatic past with poor attachment relationships, or dependence, but not for certainty as they need to be delineated. Treatments for “love addiction” mean self-reporting assessments become needed separating the experience consequence from those of other disorder, and to cover the extent of contents this disorder holds.
