1.Firoozeh’s parents don’t speak English fluently, and their efforts to do so often lead to embarrassment, especially for their children. Why doesn’t Firoozeh do more to encourage her parents to learn English? To what extent can you relate to the experience of being embarrassed by your family?
Firoozeh’s parents English isn’t very fluent and whenever they did try to speak in English, it would most likely lead to the embarrassment of their children. In her essay “Fish Cheeks,” Amy Tan narrates about her struggles of self-acceptance and the shameful actions her family presented during a Christmas Eve family dinner with her crush Robert, and his family. It gave her uncomfortable feelings and forced her to blush if her mother was speaking. Only when she got older she realized her own mistake – judging by the way the person talks, instead of the way he or she thinks. It made Amy Tan perceive that her own “perfect English”, which she used to implement in her early writing, does not stand a chance and that it is boring and useless. She decided to write in the simple, the “most full” language, so people like her mother would understand it. Her mother and her “broken English” created the writer with a unique style of presentation.…

The barriers between the mothers and their daughters, is mostly due to the fact that are unable to truly communicate with one another. Even though the daughters know some Chinese and the mothers speak little English, there is the inability to accurately translate the meaning of their words. Before the novel actually begins, there is a parable that talks about a mother talking about having a daughter who “speaks only perfect American English” (Tan 3) and she waits for the day when she can tell her daughter about the feather of a swan she wants to give to her but she is never able to say it in the “perfect American English”, it again shows the cultural and linguistic barrier between the mothers and their daughters. To know the meaning behind their mothers’ words, the daughters need to know the Chinese culture to fully grasp what their mothers are trying to…

Ratatouille is a 2007 American film produced by Pixar that follows the journey of Remy, a young rat that aspires to be a chef, and his garbage boy turned chef friend Linguini. The whole film summarized into a sentence is basically that Remy’s dream of being a chef and Linguini 's dream of being a success is only possible in the end with the help of the other one, emphasizing the importance of collaboration. However the important take away is not this heartwarming lesson, but rather the way that global communities stereotype those with a standard American accent, such as the one used by both Remy and Linguini. According to Jessica Love of The American Scholar, European accents are typically perceived as high class and knowledgeable in foreign…

I believe that there is a difference in how individuals communicate; it all depends on a person’s gender and the language he or she grew up speaking.…
