You work at Costco as an assistant manager. One of your employees “Juan” tells you that he is being harassed by the store manager who is calling him a “queer, a fag, and a sissy. ” Juan is now calling in sick. (Be sure to read the 2 articles for information)

Qa. What is the issue and what do you do? General manager John Weaver used a homophobic slur that offended Juan I. Valera the photo lab manager who is a homosexual and HIV positive. Being offended Valera took a leave of absence as he feared that he was at risk of homophobic remarks by his boss. As his return to work, Valera went to assistant manager Carl Barrio to seek protection from Weaver as Valera didn’t feel safe. Barrio informs Valera that he just has to inform other managers. What education could be used with children to keep them from doing this as adults?
A week of classes of acceptance and responsibility of homosexuality and bisexuality of men and women. Transgender/Transsexual and stigma behind it and acceptance class. STD’s and HIV/AIDS awareness and how to treat people who have life-threatening diseases like HIV and AIDS.

QC. How does homophobia cost a business and affect us all?
It affects a business due to lack of handling an employee on company grounds. Leaving fellow employees to believe that company won’t go to take care of them in a similar situation. The wayward press the company will receive due to unspeakable actions toward this man for his sexual orientation. As stated above revenue lost. It affects us all as a society that a homosexual man whose sexual preference does not have anything to with his work performance bullied out of his job by harassment. There’s no Costco’s in Eau Claire, but the original Costco in Seattle, Washington which is my hometown and I lost respect for the company in this situation that could’ve handled with the firing of John Weaver.
