Statement of Interest and Vision
I believe I can engage with the larger black community on campus. After attending the Community Organizing workshop where I participated in Austin McCoy's workshop, I learned how grad student groups can play a role in supporting each other on campus. In addition, the lessons he taught about supporting black undergrads as Michigan can be applicable to our relationship with BULA.

I think that seeing how successful the Butch Carpenter committee was in cultivating leadership within BLSA, I believe that we can take advantage of pre-existing constitutional committees to provide more leadership opportunities for our 1Ls. It was up to me to teach her the tricks of the trade for everything-- from tying her shoes to studying for her first math test. Although I didn’t have any designated leadership positions during my early years of high school, it was the similarly intimate, accidental moments of leadership that colored my participation in my extracurriculars.…

Communication is of essential importance in any workplace, relationship, and gathering, which creates efficient leadership within a group. Towards the closing of my junior year, I was elected to be one of the few student board members to my school’s National Honor Society. Adapting to the responsibility that a highly respected board member carries of such a prestigious group truly distinguishes differences between the ordinary member and those who collectively lead the organization. From coordinating induction ceremonies for incoming members, to communicating with local providers for community service events, being a representative of…

One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. Frederick Douglass once said “It is not light that we need, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake.” This means that difficult circumstances are needed to become better versions of ourselves. As someone who overcame the difficulty of balancing academics, athletics, and involvement with clubs and organizations on campus, I personally agree with this statement. Based upon the qualities I developed during these difficult circumstances, Frederick Douglass would believe I’m deserving of a scholarship bearing his name.…

How would you work with staff and the Board of Trustees to ensure that the voices of all students are heard around the Board table? I feel that communication is a vital part of being a student trustee, but it's not just a matter of communication with students, it's also important to ensure that information gets the attention it deserves at higher levels. If chosen to be one of the HWDSB student trustees one of my top priorities would be to ensure that there are a diverse range of voices being heard.…
