“Find your purpose.” This is Grand Canyon University’s ultimate slogan to all of those who pursue their education here, or to those who are affiliated with the university in some way. By discovering one’s purpose at GCU, a contribution is made to attain four primary goals: Efficiency, predictability, uniformity, and control. By achieving these goals, an organization is successful in instituting itself as a bureaucracy. The school is an official bureaucracy because a myriad of individuals strives to accomplish a sense of purpose while maintaining the structural components of the bureaucratic system. Brian Mueller, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and President of GCU, evolved the campus from a small, Christian liberal arts college to a large, Christian university set on enriching the academic and life experiences of those who attend (Grand Canyon University, 2016). Advancing onto the first few rungs, The Board of Trustees, Executive Team, Academic Leadership Team, and Campus Leadership Team have all taken part in developing and cultivating the educational, financial, and life programs offered at GCU. From here, separate colleges have arisen, such as the College of Doctoral Studies, College of Business, College of Nursing and Health Care Professions, etc. These individual colleges are considered as divisions of labor, which are distributions of tasks to different groups or individuals to increase efficiency. Not only are various colleges seen as divisions of labor; Campus departments such as Public Safety, Health, Counseling, Student Resources, and Dining are divisions of labor. For instance, GCU’s university policies include classroom policies, academic policies, admission requirements, and graduation requirements. These set of regulations ensure that everyone attending GCU is able to perform their tasks in the most predictable and proficient way. The establishment of the rules also reinforces equal treatment amongst GCU’s numerous members. Uniformity becomes prevalent because if everyone abides by the rules, the operations at the campus will continue running smoothly. This will therefore increase working productivity in the educational stratum. Without written rules, classes, programs, and jobs will become disoriented and cause efficiency to deteriorate.
