The Pharmacy Services segment offers pharmacy benefit management services, Medicare Part D services, mail order and specialty pharmacy services, retail pharmacy network management services, prescription management systems, clinical services, disease management programs, and medical pharmacy management services. Walgreens also has its own PBM, Walgreens Health Services, making it the most comparable to CVS in terms of what both businesses offer. CVS also competes for market share with discount stores; particularly Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart which is a retail discount giant has a smaller presence in the prescription drug market but has a huge advantage against CVS in front store sales. Its large gains in market share for both prescription drugs and front store sales are likely reflective of decreasing consumer spending in the face of the economic downturn. In accumulation to their pharmacies, CVS features on trend beauty departments, photo labs and general merchandise. CVS/minute clinic offers convenient access to care with nearly 1000 locations. Their nurse practitioners diagnose illnesses and injuries and skin conditions and provide a variety of wellness services, including vaccinations, physicals and chronic conditions monitoring. In addition to filling specialty prescriptions they provide the tools and services patients need.
