In the article entitled “Bowling Alone: America’s Declining Social Capital” of Robert D. Putnam, the United States has a strong and active civil society; however, it has been weakening over the past several decades. The civic engagement in the U.S. has witnessed significant drop on many factors, such as number of voters, number of public meetings, number of people who trust the government in Washington, and so on. However, new types of organization are growing rapidly including tertiary associations, non-profit organizations, and support groups. Putnam suggests some possible solutions to re-empower the U.S. civic engagement, such as focusing on organizations and networks that help increase social capital, encourage the face-to-face social interaction, and explore creatively how public policy have impact on social-capital formation (Putnam).…

The Human Rights Campaign represents a force of more than 1.5 million members and supporters nationwide. As the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organization, HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are ensured of their basic equal rights, and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community. In my opinion, the human rights campaign is a critical part of America’s journey towards full equality. Often times, minorities, such as the LGBTQ community, are under represented, if represented at all, on the nation’s largest platforms. LGBTQ people deserve the visibility that everyone else receives without a second thought.…

This adoption of overindulgence and extravagant spending is the focus of journalist James Hamblin’s profile, Living Simply in a Dumpster. In this article, Mr. Hamblin writes about Jeff Wilson, the dean of the Houston-Tillotson University, and his message about rejecting indulgence and returning to a practice of living in deliberation and ecological awareness. This idea is communicated and dramatized by both the journalist and the dean through a compelling use of ethos, logos, and kairos. James Hamblin and Jeff Wilson ultimately strengthen Wilson’s message about living deliberately by establishing themselves as credible, authoritative,…

Our sustainability initiative addresses the problem on campus of the littered cigarette butts outside many of the buildings. Starting this year, Plymouth State is a smoke free campus, so we no longer have cigarette disposal bins. We plan to install clear disposal bins for cigarette butts to physically show people how much they are smoking and to make our campus a cleaner place. The goal of this initiative is not to support smoking on campus, but instead aid in the existing problem of the non biodegradable cigarette filters that litter our campus, while still educating those on the damages smoking can cause. This will create a more sustainable community because of the cleaner and more welcoming environment the campus with no unsightly cigarette litter.…
