Ineffective Communication Case Study

The ability to have an effective communication is appropriate to become a successful nurse in facilities and outside of it. To have the ability to be associated and have great communication with patients is tremendous because this can have the advantage of building relationship amongst patient and other health care team members. By having the skill of communication this can prevent anymore medical error and can guide the patient into better health. Having a better understanding of communication with the patient will guide the nurse more effectively to have a sense of safety towards the patients and other healthcare team members.

In the very beginning of the consultation, it is already showing an ineffective information which states, “Why are here, Shona?” This example is already showing few confusions because the nurse has not introduced herself yet which can be very aggressive to a patient who is anxious. Instead, the nurse should have simply stated “Hi, Shona what can I help you with today?” by introducing herself this can have a sense of convenience and safety for Shona; moreover, this can lead to effective assessment on her health. Another ineffective communication example is “So, you think you are having a heart attack?” but the correct should have been “Can you tell me more about the pain and the tightness you are feeling in your chest? How would you rate it?” For instance, this alternate statement is an example of a focused question which “can help clients prioritize immediate concerns” (book) This is used when a nurse needs more clarification of how the patient is feeling and a more detailed understanding. A third example of ineffective communication is “It’s likely all of the stress that’s making you ill. I believe you should talk to a counselor.” The nurse should have been more diligently and understanding since Shona have not been feeling herself lately; furthermore, the nurse should have been used a more therapeutic response when dealing with a sensitive patient. On the other hand, the alternate response should have been “although you have been having a hard time, would you want me to help you set up an appointment with a counselor?” By stating the response, this can reassure that Shona is being helped and well taken care of the healthcare member of the facility. Although there were many ineffective communication in the conversation, it was near the end when the nurse said “Maybe you’re depressed” this clearly states a lot of disrespect towards
