Introduction
In 1999, audiences around the world wandered into a low-budget thriller wondering if the documentary they were about to see was real footage of the last horrific moments of young filmmakers lost in the harried woods of Western Maryland. For over a year, recovered footage about their disappearance had been continuously viewed and updated on the movie’s website and missing persons advertisements depicting the trio’s disappearance had been disseminated throughout college campuses nationwide. Was it real? was it a hoax? America demanded the story and came out en masse to view for themselves.

Some people weren’t fans of the shaky footage claiming it gave them motion sickness, others couldn’t tolerate the actor’s themselves, and there were a few that just didn’t understand it. The movie, as it turns out, perhaps wasn’t as memorable as its marketing. Regardless of the critics, The Blair Witch Project reached out to audiences through the digital divide and encouraged people to start talking about its story.
