Beating Mental Illness
Imagine a normal day, the sun is out, and there is a pedestrian crossing the street. This pedestrian has to walk in front of a car that is waiting for them to cross. They walk quickly across the street in fear that the driver waiting for them thinks that they are taking too long. This pedestrian starts shaking, suddenly she doesn’t have control of her body or mental state. She is overcome with worry and self doubt. This is an example of someone who struggles with extreme anxiety disorder, a mental illness that affects millions of Americans every year. Mental illness is common in many people, and it is a serious problem that can be helped with the right care and treatment.
Mild anxiety can result in many things, such as worry, trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, loss of interest, substance abuse, loss of concentration, loss of appetite or overeating, not being able to sit still, and needing constant reassurance (Bjornlund). In fact, depression affects over 100 million people worldwide (NIMH). The stress on young adults has become extremely overwhelming, and is taking an extreme negative toll on those who are preparing to go into the real world. Too many young adults suffer with some type of mental illness, and it is a serious issue that needs to be taken into more consideration, because mental health is extremely important to living a happy, healthy, fulfilling life . I believe that there are ways to prevent it from happening to so many people, especially in their childhood. I believe that everyone that does suffer from a mental illness, deserves to get the help and treatment that they
