“Arrest in Hong Kong Maid-Abuse Case” (WSJ, 2014)
The abuse of foreign domestic helpers (FDH) is not uncommon at all. It is not only through physical violence but also via the deprivation of food and even money. As a result, social and political tensions are at an all time high and the fact that an FDH named Erwiana Sulistyaniangsih was recently tortured has not eased such conflicts. However, Hong Kong is not the only one to blame, but also their counterparts, the countries where FDHs come from.
Hong Kong has a two-week rule in place, stating that FDHs have two weeks after the termination of contract to seek employment or the HK immigration department would otherwise carry out deportation. This has discouraged FDHs to bring matters into their own hands by either filing a complaint to the labour tribunal or termination of employment contract by the FDH.
