There are two adrenal glands, they are located on the top of each kidney. The adrenal gland has 2 part: the inner part is the medulla, the outer part is the cortex. The medulla secrets the catecholamines and cortex secret aldosteron, cortisol and androgen. Aldosteron regulate the potassium and sodium level by increasing sodium and water reabsorption in the kidneys and it also causes excretion of potassium through the kidneys. Besides, aldosterol regulates the blood pressure through the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.Cortisol stimulates gluconeogenesis in the liver and help to maintain a normal glucose concentration of the blood. It also stimulates lipolysis throughtout the body. Cortisol depresses the immune response and also decrease the inflammation. The Androgen secretion from the cortex has minimal role in males. Rather, it has more of an important role in females. Androgen in men are mainly produced by the testis. Androgens are mainly associated with the development of secondary sexual characteristics. The adrenal glands have a big role in maintaining …show more content…
The reason it’s called “primary” is that the underlying problem is localized to the adrenal gland itself, rather than a problem of a hormone that acts on the adrenal gland or elsewhere in the body.
The hypothalamus releases corticotropin releasing hormone which stimulates the anterior pituitary gland to produce adrenocorticotropic hormone ( ACTH). ACTH travel to the adrenal gland especially the adrenal cortex where it stimulate the adrenal cortex to produce and secrete hormones. The main cause of primary insufficiency and therefore the main cause of Addison’s disease
Addison’s disease occurs in all ages groups and affects both sexes. It can be
