Although there are many problems in this case, the main problem is lack of student learning, which needs to be the top priority of a free and appropriate public education, aside from safety, which is always at the forefront. As the principal, I need to reflect on my last 2 years of making an attempt to develop positive and trusting relationships, and my own growth as an educational leader. The problem here is that Principal Hulbert is still at a Level 1 leadership role; where people follow you simply because of your title. This was demonstrated when Bill Osborne, the employee spokesperson, told the principal, “You are the boss and you can force us to revise the lesson plans. Just tell us what you want in the lesson plans, we’ll copy it, and we can go on to more important issues,” (Kowalski, 2012, p.5).…

Zero Tolerance Policies: Preparing School-aged Children for Prison The implementation of the Zero Tolerance Policy in in the early 90s created a whirlwind of issues; mainly that it did more harm than good. This policy was originally aimed to make schools safer by penalizing any student caught with drugs or weapons. This sounds like a good thing; however, through a lot of revisions and revisiting this policy, it became clear that any minor indiscretion would receive the same punishment a large offense would. Another issue surrounding zero tolerance is the class base and racialized nature; this policy contributes the criminalization of young black and Latino students.…

When the racial incidents of the University of Missouri System made it to the national headlines it looked like the banner of racism was back, the incident reminded us that racial inequality was a serious issue in the United States, a topic many have forgotten. To myself and many others, the civil right movements in the 60s and the 70s seemed to have “solved” the problem of racial segregation, but in truth as we all see today, that was not the case. The discussion of racial topics was often mentioned and discussed in a somewhat inconsistent manner. Discrimination of race is present in politics through the places of work because people are getting fired for defending what they believe in as well as being judged for their opinions. In Newark, New Jersey a professor was fired for defending a blacks lives matter event. The administration said they were "immediately inundated with feedback from students, faculty and prospective students and their families expressing frustration, concern and even fear that the views expressed by a College employee (with influence over students) would negatively impact their experience on the campus”(Schmidt). This example shows discrimination of race because the school board made the decision to willingly fire a teacher because she went through with an interview…
