There is one man that influenced some of the most significant inventions that we use everyday of our lives. Edison modified and created many things all throughout his life this led to him having many patents Edison had 1,093 total patents. One of the most well known invention that Edison modified and left in his legacy was the light bulb that can last for long periods of time. Another creation was the Phonograph and the cylinders made out of wax so people could record audio and play it after. The cylinders could have different messages or songs. Edison is sometimes referred to as the Father of Motion Picture, Mr. Edison was a major influence in the development of motion picture and films. Edison came up with the idea of the phonograph when thinking of two other inventions the telegraph and the telephone. Edison used the idea of speaking in the telephone and the telegraph making markings on paper to create the phonograph. Edison gave a sketch to his mechanic and the mechanic created it within thirty hours of when he gave it to him. They filed for a patent on December 24, 1877 and it got issued to them on February 19, 1878. As Edison did with most of his experiments he made businesses with them this one was The Edison Speaking Phonograph Company which was established on January 24, 1878. Edison received $10,000 for the manufacturing and sales rights and then he got 20% of the profit. Edison stopped working on the Phonograph for awhile while he worked and experimented with the incandescent light bulb. When Edison left this opened up the opportunity for people to improve it, so Chichester Bell and Charles Sumner Tainter did exactly that. They created the graphophone and the patent was issued on May 4, 1886. They offered for Edison to join them and help create a newer and more improved model of the graphophone but Edison refused. Thomas made new changes to his machine one very important one was that he used a wax cylinder that could be used more efficiently than the thin metal that Edison was using in the old Phonograph. Edison’s first film was called The Great Train Robbery which also happened to be on of the first films ever made throughout history. Edison and many other of his researchers made the Stip Kinetoscope where people could pay 5 cents and watch a twenty to thirty second long film one at a time through the Kinetoscope. The first Kinetoscope parlor was opened in April 14, 1894 in New York City on Broadway. Edison made these shorts films in a building that he created where they used the sun for lighting in their films because the Edison light bulbs were not bright enough at the time so they used natural lighting. The building’s name was the Black Maria and Edison made short films in this building for ten years after that it was torn down and Edison moved to an improved building. Edison achieved many things in his life and had many accomplishments not to mention his awards. In 187 France presented his the Legion of Honor this is the highest award you can get if you are civilian that has made an impact on the world. In 1928 the US Congress presented him a Congressional Gold Medal. Edison also after he died has many sites that are dedicated to show what he did in the world and how his inventions changed the world forever. Edison lived a long life all the way into his eighties and worked all the way
