The difference with the 25-year-old Arab America is that he tells his family he is in "terrible pain" and yet when the nurse asks him to rate pain on the numerical pain scale he states,"2 or 3." The logic for the difference is related to his culture. That in Arab American they tend to express their pain to family members who they feel most comfortable with speaking too. It is Important for healthcare professionals to understand that some cultures may not understand the numerical pain scale and may need to ask direct questions with yes or no answers to pain. The nurse may need to have them describe their pain instead of using a numerical rating pain scale to understand them better.
