The gun violence has often shone a negative image on the city. The reason because is more than five hundred people were murdered last year from gun violence. One example of the violent killings is the death of Hadiya Pendleton, a teenager who performed at Obama’s second inauguration. On January 29, 2012, fifteen year old was shot in the back while standing with friends inside Harsh Park in Chicago after taking her final exams. This was one week after she performed at the second inauguration. Because of this act, “City Council members also voted Wednesday to impose stricter penalties on those who commit a gun crime within 100 feet of city public transportation centers”(2). This is to help protect students to go and to come home from school. Alderman Pat Dowel said, “We are sending the message that we will not tolerate any violence around our student.” They should feel safe from being controlled by gun violence. The do not want to have guns near the children. “The ordinance creates ‘public transportation safety zones,’ and extension of existing ‘Safe Passage’…” (2). Alderman Edward Burke added that Chicago is ready for a fight if someone wants to challenge its new gun-control measures. They government should not be able to decide for the citizens without their permission. Since their funding and salaries come out of our pockets. They work for us, they do not work for themselves is the opposite sides main purpose of the argument of the new gun-control laws. On the other hand, local gun rights advocates are enthusiastic about the new ordinance that weakens restrictions on carrying guns. The reason behind this is, “Illinois approved a concealed-carry law in July, giving the state control of gun regulations, essentially reversing Chicago’s requirement of gun owners to register their weapons and have a Chicago firearm permit” (2). This is stating that an individual does not have to have their firearm registered in the state of Illinois. In Chicago that was a step back in the gun control game. This will provoke more crimes to happen in my perspective. I believe every person who owns a gun should have to have it registered in your name. This will prevent unsolved murder cases because they will be able to pin point who the murderer was because the weapons will be in their name.
