“We assemble here today, to come to a verdict on The Captured Children vs. Edward Riddle,” the Judge said, as she sat down at her chair and began sorting through loose pieces of paper on her desk. “Mr. Yosenti, bring me up to speed on this case.” The courts man nodded and went to the podium, where he cleared his throat to silence the room before he began talking. “The abductions of 16 minors took place in the late hours of December 26th, 2015. Eight girls and eight boys, all seventeen years of age, were smuggled into Argentina by a businessman from Chicago: Mr. Edward Riddle. The whereabouts of the other 12 remain unknown. The four here today spent three months in captivity, until American authorities rescued them. The four survivors immediately became reacquainted with their families upon their arrival. Medical exams showed little to no physical abuse, as well as no evidence of sexual abuse. The children, all from different areas of Chicago, did not know each other before Mr. Riddle took them. He swore in, and his lawyer immediately began his questioning. “Tell me what your destination was before Edward Riddle captured you?” she asked, coming out from behind the desks where the rest of the plaintiffs sat. “I left work to come home. It happened the day after Christmas. The mall was crazy, and last minute customers kept coming in to get sale items, so I got off later than usual. I used the same street to walk home that day that I have always used. I developed a distinct feeling that someone lurked behind me, but I ignored the feeling.” He stopped to clear his throat. His shoulders shook slightly from the overspill of momentum that came from his pulsing foot under the desk. “Just two blocks away from my home, I heard someone calling my name. I turned around then all of a sudden I was hit.” “Where exactly?” “In the face.” He

Sex trafficking awareness has increased over the past few years in the United States. Many believed that trafficking only occurred outside of the United States, however, with the increase in awareness and education many myths surrounding this awful crime are beginning to be crushed. The United States is the number one destination for victims trafficked from Latin America and the Caribbean and one of the top three destinations for the victims trafficked from Asia (Hepburn & Simon, 2010). Approximately 800,000 individuals are trafficked across international borders annually and 80% are women and 50% of the women are children. In fact, there are 50,000 victims trafficked into the United States yearly and about 400,000 United States children who…

The Unredeemed Captive is the factual telling of the Deerfield Massacre and the ways it effected the Williams family who lost their daughter as a captive to the Bear tribe of the Mohawk Native Americans. The book deeply explores religion and how it relates to the ideas of savagery and family through comparison of experiences in the lives of the Puritans and the lives of the Native American captors. The Deerfield Massacre occurred in 1704 in Massachusetts. The massacre was carried out by a tribe of Native Americans in retaliation against French and English attacks. The small town of Deerfield was raided and about 112 people were taken captive with 47 more being slain on the spot.…

Sex Trafficking Karla Jacinto, was not just one of the relatively normal women residing in poverty in Mexico. She lived a life consumed with perpetual abuse; from the age of 5, she was targeted by a close family member for the purpose of of mental, physical, and sexual abuse. This however does not culminate this young girl’s cycle of abuse. For at the exceptionally early age of 12, she was lured and captured; this led to her being sold and forced to have sex with seemingly innumerable men 30x a day for 4 years. This math adds up to 43,800 arbitrary men who viewed Karla solely as a recent purchase.…

Once again I am sitting on the couch watching another News Report on the president, so much has happened since his speech only a few days ago. It all started November 22 in my home city of Dallas. That day I woke up early to watch a news report for the new presidential campaign John F. Kennedy was talking about starting. I got all dressed up to go see the motorcade, and put on a nice hat to cover my head from the sun. It was a fair day, may I say.…

Chapter four of our text addresses physical violence. For this assignment, I have chosen an article related to a recent ongoing homicide investigation, and I will attempt to relate content from the chapter to this particular story. According to the news article, police from Milford, Deleware have acquired arrest warrants for two suspects that are believed to have been involved in the murder and home invasion of a forty year old man named John Harmon on August 8, 2015. This is an ongoing investigation, so the suspect's guilt cannot yet be determined with confidence. However, the murder of John Harmon is still related to content from chapter four that we have discussed this week.…

I found the light in the interrogation room to be simultaneously too dim and annoyingly bright. The burns, scrapes, and bruises that covered me, made every move a painful one, but I wasn’t about to tell either detective that. I would put on a good face even if it killed me, which was something that had legitimate potential. “Please state your name for the record,” commanded the man on the other side of the room.…

Navigating the immigration process in the U.S. can be a daunting process. For a layperson, going through the process alone could result in one being denied a green card, citizenship, or asylum status. Especially in the case of the latter, if the asylum seeker has entered the U.S. illegally, orders of deportation could crush their hopes of gaining legal residence, and return them to a country where they face the hardships that they were intending to escape in the first place. Last year I took on such a case, in which a 14-year-old girl was in danger of being deported back to Honduras, where she suffered daily beatings from her caretaker since the age of two, the inappropriate attention of a wealthy and influential adult man, and violence at the hands of local gangs.…

It was April 20th, 1999 when a slight breeze filled the sky, enjoying the cool winds I rocketed towards school. Arriving at school, I felt like a log flowing down a river stream, and then suddenly a loud "Bzzzzz" echoed down the halls. The hallways felt like a school of fish viciously running away from a predator hunting them down. In a matter of seconds, everything calmed down and the first period started. A sudden rumbling sound came out from my stomach, as I anxiously waited for the lunch bell to ring.…

The Little Prisoner by Jane Elliott This book was a powerful if not over powering story of a child whose step father abused her on every level of abuse; physical, mental, sexual, and emotional. The author of this book Jane, a pseudonym for the actual child, made the book come full circle. It started in the court room and was brought back to that pivotal moment when she is forced to face her attacker as an adult. It shows the reader the reaction of someone who clearly has no understanding the effects the child abuse Jane endured because the officer treated her like she was overreacting.…
