Moreover, CBT views human functioning as a process that negative and unrealistic thoughts cause distress, which results in problems in individual’s lives. The aim of CBT is to help people become aware of their negative thinking patterns, and in turn develop alternative ways of thinking that improve their feelings and behaviors, which improve their overall functioning (Bögels, Wijts, Oort, & Sallaerts, 2014). For Kevin’s case the focus would be on changing his thoughts that are related to the anxiety symptoms, which in turn can reduce or stop his behaviors in result. A technique I would incorporate in treatment with Kevin would be using thought records to identify and challenge negative thoughts, implementing a pleasant activity schedule so Kevin can participate in enjoyable activities, promote the use of coping skills, and setting realistic goals. SFT is based on solution building instead of problem solving, while exploring an individuals current resources and future goals. In addition, it helps clients use their own strengths to reach their goals. The view of human functioning is placed on the focus on the future and not the past and placing an emphasis on things in life that are changeable (Carrera et al., 2015). In the case of Kevin, if I were to implement SFT for treatment, the techniques I would incorporate would be the miracle question, exception question, and scaling questions. These techniques help the client to think about how their lives could be instead of why they cannot achieve something.
