“The Boy Who Was Raised As a Dog” by Dr. Bruce D. Perry is an extraordinary book following many cases of child trauma that Dr. Perry has worked on. In each of its 10 chapters it describes one child who experienced trauma and how it affected them and Dr. Perry tries to find out why they turned out the way they did. It is really interesting as he isn’t trying to prove or disprove anything, he just is figuring out how experiences when you are young can affect you later on. Even though most people don’t experience things like this it helps him to better understand the human mind and human reaction to trauma.…

My responsibility for this workshop was to proceed with a handover of a patient to an intern (played by Dr. Michael Adamson). This was a particularly disasterous session. My performance was not only unfit within the scope of academic criteria, but was clearly short of acceptable for a real-world SBAR. During the reading of the scenario I was daunted by the task of having to SBAR report a patient to admission at a hostpital, based on information I was reading for the first time; my practice with the hand-over system was minimal prior to the session.…

The first goal was to increase the client’s understanding with regards to her disease to prevent injury and this was partially unmet. The client disclosed some learning associated with understanding that when she ambulates, her disease affects her activity tolerance. I clarified the pathophysiology of this disease, which made it more evident to acknowledge that her disease induced this increasing dyspnea during activities and not her age. Also, she showed a significant increase in appetite by eating her meals slower and more spread out during the day, I saw a significant improvement in her breathing patterns during her meals, she didn’t cough as much or complain of pain, which justifies that she has gained some understanding behind the purpose…

Perry has personally experienced the negative effects trauma can have on the brain through his work. Doing so, has allowed Perry to introduce the Neurosequential Model. The Neurosequential Model allows a person to assess a child’s history and present functioning with a focus on the child’s current strengths and weaknesses to better help this individual.…

Recently, Dr. Harvey has been unresponsive to many questions asked of him in class and has been exhibiting a “selective hearing” behavior in regards to certain conversation topics. On October 21, I recorded a 25-minute session with Sarah Alford. We spent the session brainstorming, discussing ways Sarah could research her topic, and planning how Sarah could develop her paper in the most efficient way. By the end of the session, Sarah wrote down a tentative plan to complete the first draft two weeks from now. After I watched the video to review my performance, the video revealed that I have improved in keeping eye contact with the consultant, letting the consultant do most of the talking, and asking appropriate questions to get the consultant thinking; at the same time, the video showed I still have improvements to make with body language and tone of voice. The first question I asked Sarah was, “What would you like…
