Neal Patterson, Paul Gorup, and Cliff Illig, who were colleagues at Arthur Andersen founded Cerner in 1979. These three partners set out to build a software company for an industry where information was mission critical. The founders quickly realized hospitals were organized internally as silos and needed a method for coordinating care. They also understood that data generated in the silos could improve the quality and safety of health care if the information was shared in a common platform. In the 1980’s, Cerner created that platform (“History of Cerner Corporation” (1997).

More and more components were added to their product lines that would make them leaders in automated information systems. Cerner had a few business catastrophes along the way, but always overcame them and continued building intelligent solutions for the healthcare industry. As of 2015, Cerner has products in 18,000 facilities around the world and the company has 22,000 employees globally. Cerner is the leader in health informatics software around the world (Cerner 2015).
Cerner’s main EHR service is Software as a Service (SaaS) or a cloud based service. SaaS deployment of EHR (electronic health records) decreases the amount of upfront hardware needed, which in return decreases the cost of implementation. Cerner is also a modular EHR, and according to HealthIT.gov means that each “module” of the EHR meets at “least one certification criterion” or “it could provide all capabilities but one” (HealthIT.gov,

What Cerner allows them to do is stay connected throughout all the different facilities. They have acute care, behavioral health programs, long-term care facility, and a new specialist and surgery center. The relationship that Truman and Cerner have allowed for better and faster care for patients. With technology rapidly growing, the partnership allows them to learn and work with one another. There are on-site associates from Cerner working with TMC, allowing a unique relationship to occur. The improvements on the system happen more quickly because of the physical presence of the Cerner workers and the medical staff, which in turn benefits the patients.
