Cas Standards

In this paper, I will address whether the University of Northern Colorado Career Services where I intern this semester follows the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) policy or not. After having a one on one conversation with the Career Services Director, she made realize that Career Services used the CAS materials to conduct their 5-year program review. In this paper, I will not offer recommendations for ways the Career Services office might better meet CAS standards. Instead, I will analyze what CAS Standards I notice or fit within Career Services in the time I intern with them.

Career Services creates opportunities for students to connect with employers and working alumni in order to learn insider information about the world of work and to increase the likelihood of becoming gainfully employed upon graduation. Career Services stays current on economic and world of work trends and provides this information to students and the UNC community while adapting services accordingly.
In my time at the University of Northern Colorado, I learned some department do not align with the mission statement of the institution and Career Services is one of those department. As a student I am really disappointed with the institution mission, it takes about the degrees university offers and not overall goal. While Career Services mission is clear and talks about being collaborative and some form of the holistic students like most student affair missions. As a student affairs practitioner, I know this is problematic on many levels and one of the only recommendation I have for the institution as a whole. After 8 months of interning with University of Northern Colorado Career Services, I learned that all the counselors are highly qualified and versatile in all areas of career. From my experience, the staff is more diverse than most department at the University of Northern Colorado and there is no form discriminatory. All staff including student staff know policies and procedure within Career Services.
Ethics
CAS ethics gazes at implementing appropriate statements of ethical practice within Career Services and the ethic is clear communicated with the new staff. I am trained to respect privacy and maintain confidentiality in all communications and records (CAS, 2017). As a Career Counselor, I am not allowed to leak information about other clients or my clients. The CAS Ethic part means keeping the integrity of the department, the policies in place, and avoid unethical behavior.
