Stayner, who was kidnapped from Merced for seven years and brainwashed into thinking he was someone else. Cary’s parents and family members grieved over Steven for seven years before he escaped and returned home. Cary, being the oldest of the Stayner bunch, claimed that he felt neglected throughout the years that Steven was missing. The emotional toll was heavy on the Stayner family, Cary as the oldest and only other brother, was looked up to by his younger sisters! Many people consider Steven’s disappearance and reappearance to be the main cause of Cary’s deadly outbursts. Many people say he was neglected as a child, which he may have been. But to me, I think there was something else wrong with Stayner. He was deadly, with or without negligence. He admitted to fantasizing about killing women when he was only 7 years of age. He can’t blame everything on his family problems; he was just disturbed in my opinion.
Although he seemed normal in his teen years, having many friends, seeming like a nice guy, there was a monster beneath the surface. He wore a mask to society, he had relationships, friendships, but underneath that cover up was a deeply disturbed, blood thirsty serial killer. It was so unexpected when people of Merced found out he had committed the murders. He
