Another article states, “The average attention span is five minutes. Ten years ago, it used to be 12 minutes” (Plumridge). This is proving that the internet growing in popularity among those doing research and many authors has created a problem with the rate of many people’s attention span. Most of the quotes given by the various scholars have a harsh tone. The researchers seem overly defensive and even condescending to the young students they are talking about. For example, David Meyer, a psychology professor who conducted a study on the role of students’ divided attention while learning, comments at one point, “[young people] are deluded … there’s nothing magical about [their] brains.” Meyer explains that no matter how much this younger generation likes using media, the simple fact remains that the human brain cannot effectively handle carrying out two tasks at once. Another psychology professor, Larry Rosen, articulates similar arrogant language towards adolescents, saying, “Young people have a wildly inflated idea of how many things they can attend to at once.”…

In Macdonald's essay, "Reading and Thought", the author cautions his readers that our society has developed bad reading habits due to an abundance of information. He proposes that because there is so much information supplied by newspaper articles and magazines, people are beginning to read less and skim through important details. His ideas are supported both by Carr and Crovitz who have written specifically on this issue concerning reading habits and how recent generations have reacted negatively to our world’s technological advancements. In Nicholas Carr’s essay, Is Google Making Us Stupid, he notes that the internet has clearly had negative impacts on the way we read, process thoughts, and even how we write. He argues that through the many years of being online, it has helped him with research and has allowed him to search through endless amounts of information in a short period of time, which would be otherwise impossible in a library. I agree that this is a sort of convenience that we all enjoy, especially myself, but it does hold issues we are only looking for related material for our works; and not for the sake of understanding of what we need to know. Also, is it almost impossible to read anything without wanting to get to the point instantaneously, and if not, we become somewhat unenthused and “fidgety.” But I did find that…

This is the best credible evidence to be able to give and make a point across; it is coming straight from the source. Carr has a passionate view on how google is messing with ways of thinking and how it is affecting the brain; he does a good job of backing up his claim.
