“Layla” by Colleen Hoover is an interesting novel that covers romance, mystery, and supernatural elements. The story is about Leeds, a musician, and Layla, the woman he falls in love with. They meet at Layla’s sister Aspen’s wedding where Leeds is performing with his band. Leeds notices her from the stage and they instantly have a strong connection with each other. The setting shifts to a creepy Bed and Breakfast in Maine. Leeds takes Layla there to recover after a traumatic accident however the place is not what they think, soon Leeds encounters a spirit that affects his relationship with Layla. When he is first brought into the book, he is energetic and carefree, but by the end, he has gone through guilt and grief. A big turning point in Leeds’s character is after Layla’s accident. A tremendous amount of guilt is on him, and he shows it. For example, he says “Sometimes I wonder if I would have met her today. . . how she is now. . . would I have fallen in love with her as easily as I fell in love with her in the beginning? I don’t know what to do. Part of me thinks maybe I wouldn’t be able to fall in love with this version of her at all. And when I have those thoughts. . . it makes me feel like a shit. Because I’m the reason she is the way she is. I’m the reason she’s so unhappy now. Because I failed to protect her”. This is one of Leeds’s main turning points, as he starts feeling guilty about what happened to Layla. Then once Layla is eventually healed, he has changed as a person because of everything he had to go through to bring Layla back. After the incident, Leeds fell for Layla and he started to care more about her and like her even more than he did previously. In the end, the events that happened with Layla and the ghost made Leeds a better person and less carefree, he started to appreciate more and care more about other
