Carpentry would not exist without Math. Carpentry is one of the oldest skilled trades that is still used to this day, but also the base and necessity in all aspects for carpentry to be precise. There are references taking the word back to the French origins, “charpentier”, (pronounced char-pen-ti-er) which means a carriage maker. But history shows carpentry goes back to the beginning of time, existing in every culture and civilization. Today, I will show you examples of how carpentry was present from the ancient times all the way through present day, how carpentry was used in ways to sustain life, create art, build colonies, villages and civilizations and how man used carpentry to better themselves.

According to history, Ban is given credit to develop the use of the plane, chalk line, and other carpentry tools. His work as a carpenter documents descriptions of dimensions for building items and objects – such as altars. And he gets credit for instructions concerning “Feng Shui” (pronounced Fung-Shway which means (wind and water) the ancient Chinese practice of geomancy, positioning of physical objects in strategic locations to stimulate optimal wellness, health, and happiness. The Chinese were famous for producing furniture without the use of glue or nails.
As time continue on, there exists in mathematics a unique number, 0.618, which is referred to as the ‘Golden Section’, Golden Rule, ’Golden Proportion’, or ‘Golden Ratio’. The formula was first recorded by Euclid, c. 300 B.C. The Great Leonardo Da Vinci is an example of how art, carpentry and mathematics work together in harmony. The important relationship of mathematics to art is expressed and understood when discussing Leonardo’s artwork, in the documents, letters and notes he wrote. The average carpenter works more than 40 hours a week and has high rate of illnesses due to the conditions in which they work. Carpenters work indoors and outdoors on construction projects, from installing kitchen cabinets to building highways and bridges. Carpentry can be physically demanding, and carpenters have a higher rate of injuries and illnesses. The employment of carpenters is expected to grow 8 percent in the next 20 years.
