Before Herring performance, I believed her songs might have been a little controversial. Her songs cover topics about slavery, a child murderer, and the Civil Rights movement. I have lived in the south my entire life, and I have never heard of Mae Francis Moultrie. Listening to her sing the song about how she “did not want to live that way” was interesting. When hearing about the Civil Rights movement, I never sat down and really thought about what they were thinking and what they were going through. Even hearing how a little white girl decided to give the Freedom Riders water even though that was considered the wrong was inspiring. After the concert, I did research over Mae Francis Moultrie and realized all the information she song in her song was completely true. Viewing the picture of Mae in the white dress made me appreciate the song and its message even more. It gives an impressive point of view to a story that many people may have never
