Carolina Guarrell A Short Story

For some students getting to classes between the magical ten-minute break is equivalent to an obstacle course. “Some days, between the high school students and the steady stream of texters, who fail to look up from their phones or walk at a New York pace, I barely make it to class on time, “says Carolina Guarrella, a student here at Brooklyn College. For Guarrella navigating this obstacle almost proved deadly when she almost got run over by a bus while crossing Bedford Avenue to get to the other side of campus. “I was rushing to class,” she said I was nervous I would be a bit late, so I was not being as attentive as I should have been.” On this particular day, her heeled boots didn’t help matters as she rapidly made her way from James Hall …show more content…
Most days on either sides of the campus, a large crowd of students can be seen waiting to cross the street as cars and buses zoom by. “It seems impossible to pull a standard New Yorker move and dive into the street the minute I see an opportunity to beat the light,” says Guarrella. On that particular day when she almost got run over Guarrella was eager to see the light turn yellow so she ran into the street to get ahead of the large crowd that would have undoubtedly slowed her down. Something Lilia Melani, Literature Professor is all also familiar with “It is tempting, particularly if you're pressed for time, to run across the street even if cars may be approaching.” Melani also affirmed “I remember in the past that students have been hit crossing the street.” However, she could not recall any particular details. Yet, according to _____ Woodly a campus police officer who's been working at Brooklyn College for at least twelve years. There haven’t been many accidents along the crosswalk on Bedford Avenue due the rushing of students. "Nothing serious, just sometimes cars have minor accidents,” said Woodly. He went on to say, "We used to have a bridge, but they took it down because it was dangerous.” A claim Melani does not share “I think bridges are safer than tunnels, less chance of being assaulted or robbed. An advantage when it snows.” Nevertheless, it would seem as though the ten minutes is a pain that must be endured. Sometimes it is better to suffer now and get what you want later, right now it seems as though were all suffering some more than

On Thursday, October 20, 2016, at approximately 07:48AM, I was dispatched to Hooper and New Patient Tower Loop, in reference to a hit and run accident involving a pedestrian and a vehicle. While enroute to the scene, I was stopped by College Students standing under the NPT Loop awning saying that Ms. Hannah Miller was hit by a vehicle. I asked the College students where was Ms. Miller and they advised me that she was standing in front of me. I asked Ms. Miller what happened. Ms. Miller advised me that she was walking across the pedestrian crosswalk at Hooper and NPT Loop in the southbound lane of traffic underneath an umbrella with her friend Brooke Becker.…

UMass Lowell is a public institution where scholars, coming from all kinds of locations, can practice their education to their advantage to study for the career they wish to pursue. Whether students live on campus or commute to the campus on a daily basis, they recognize that it can be reasonable to access and travel to no matter where they come from. While most students live in a residence hall on campus, others can commute from their hometowns, using any form of transportation they can identify. Students that commute to school from Boston have simple options concerning travel to and from school, including driving in the traffic-congested Interstate highways, and riding a train on the hour-long Lowell Line, a commuter rail system that the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority operates. However, few students that…

Grant and his other classmates from Cedarwood Middle were slouching with their heads down on the desks. They’ve kept this position until the raucous bell rang, which woke them up from their trance. As Grant walked down the noisy hallways, he observed many of the bulletin boards and posters hung up on the beige, spotted walls. These colorful pictures kept him motivated to work hard and persevere. He approached the crowded cafeteria, made up of round tables with bubble gum stuck to each one, rusty trash cans that make an annoying noise if they fall, and windows covered in random oil stains coming from the greasy food the lunch ladies cook.…

Francis Libermann’s hallways and stairwells are rather narrow at parts, adding to this issues are the students who block the majority of the walkways by slowly walking in a horizontal line without regards to those behind them who need to get to class. It is difficult to pass these people as they are often conversing with each other and would not yield to those who would like to walk faster. It is very frustrating during moments like these, especially when the 2 classes are far apart and there is barely enough time allotted for travel. However, the most infuriating thing is the utter lack of solutions to the problem. From personal experience, it is known that as much as one try not to be obstructive, there are always times where personal gain, like conversing with one’s friends, or the obliviousness to the situation, overrides the thoughts of being considerate of others.…

These choices are; choose to be a servant leader, choose to be present, choose to communicate with candor, choose to crack the code of the naysayer, choose simplicity, choose to make laughing mandatory, choose to feed and be fed, and choose to go all in. A free extra nugget of information includes “move the baby!” As a high school counselor who currently serves 420 students in a poverty-ridden area of Missouri, I am constantly searching for ways to grow as a servant…

The Service Setting Appeal I attended a class held in a lecture hall at Bellevue College in Bellevue, Washington where I earned my associate’s degree. The area of study for the class was history and it was held in the only lecture hall on the campus, the Paccar Conference and Lecture Hall. The institution was very proud of the hall and along with holding lectures, would rent it out to local businesses and associations for use. I remember the environment of the hall and my learning experience very well because the professor made a point to tell the class about the hall’s acoustic design and the overall service setting and that is a memory that is always stuck with me.…

In today’s competitive, technologically-advanced business-world, one’s success is merely measured in terms of their prosperity in education. Between the pressures the education systems inflict on students to educators’ lack of diligence in teaching sufficient amounts of core material, the American school system throughout the years has failed to establish their priorities. This, in effect, has deteriorated the overall global standpoint of the nation, leading to a substantial decline in effective teaching. From the American school board’s perspective, the contending factor in determining the effectiveness of teaching is based solely on statistics. Rather than focusing on teaching an all-inclusive and fruitful education to students, teachers…
