Carole Wilkinson’s fantasy novel ‘Dragonkeeper’ is set in Ancient China and follows a slave girl and her dragon companion as they protect a dragon egg while traveling towards the ocean. ‘The journey of a thousand li begins with a single step.” (82) The factors of a fantasy novel are clearly evident in the book ‘Dragonkeeper’ because the story has a possible structure with its limits, ‘Dragonkeeper’ is set in a present era but with a fantasy twist and the characters grow to become better people. Through the book these factor show.
Throughout the book, the structure stays intact while showing reasonable limits. Ping and Danzi travel to the ocean like any other person in the Han Dynasty by walking or taking boats down the river instead of flying as it would make the story less believable. ‘Must go to Yellow River.’ (184), ‘Travel by boat.’ (184). Danzi is a made up animal but he has his limits, he is helpless to iron ‘Blade is made of Iron!’ (107), as Danzi is old he cannot fly for very long as flying drains him out. Storyline and structure is an important thing that Dragonkeeper has, as without a storyline the book would go off track and would become very difficult to understand. Plots give the book factor that go toward becoming a fantasy.

Ping the main protagonist grows as a person during the journey with Danzi towards the ocean. She learns things that were otherwise impossible to learn like finding out her name ‘Ping’ (55). Ping’s personality changes during the book from being a scared unsure person to a more confident and brave person the things Ping did later in the novel wouldn’t have happened unless Ping had grown as a person. Ping began to have instinctual protectiveness over the dragon stone ‘She hugged the stone close to her’ (224). A character growing is a major factor in a fantasy
