Growth Mindset Analysis

When a person has an epiphany after a life changing event, they will act upon themselves to change their mindset. In Carol Dweck’s Brainology article she establishes growth mindset. People who use this mindset in their lives do not allow themselves to stop trying even though they face challenges. A growth mindset is knowing hard work and dedication will lead to a person’s goals. In “ The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time” the main character Christopher has obstacles that were appointed to him since birth. These obstacles do not determine what kind of person he will become.The actions Christopher acts upon are products of how he lives his life in a mindset that slowly gets him to value his growths. Next month I am going to take my A level in maths and I’m going to get an A grade” ( Haddon 44). Christopher may have heard someone insult him and he is recalling that moment by proving that he is intelligent enough to pass a difficult math exam. He has motivation to push himself and improve his mathematical capabilities. Chris has characteristics of a growth mindset because he did not allow that negative remark affect his outcome. He put in the effort at home by practicing math because he knew that was his strength. He could have stopped practicing when he realized he was intelligent enough to understand math but he kept on practicing and with those actions, he was also practicing on having a growth mindset. Christopher’s determination to get things done proves he can get out of his comfort zone by overcoming his setbacks. Besides, he even goes to London to live with his mother. This is proved when he arrives in London where his mother lives and he was saying positive things to himself “ And I thought I can do this, because I was doing really well and I was in London and I would find my mother” (Haddon 172). Christopher is one step closer to living with his mother. In the beginning he told himself that he would get to London and in this quote, he is already in the process of arriving which proves that he set himself to do something and it was done even though he had to go over many barriers that he was uncomfortable with. When Christopher told himself that he can do this, he revealed to himself that setbacks are not what define him but instead its his thrive that reveals his true nature on how his growth mindset is applied to events that may have been difficult to do. For Christopher his hard work consisted of interacting with people and having to be near them the whole way through his trip. His potential is disclosed when he sees the possibilities of his future, in fact, he stated: “And I can live in a flat with a garden and a proper toilet” (Haddon 221). Christopher sees himself living by himself. This is proof that he will be able to take care of himself and the events and lessons learned through the novel is the product of his improvement into a growth
