Carnival of Fury Book Review Tragedy, such is the case of Robert Charles. In the book Carnival of Fury, even though it is primarily about the shooter Robert Charles, we learn about the history of a number of towns in Mississippi and Louisiana. From the history of an independent political group composed of mostly republicans to a criminal group that harassed blacks and Jews all the way to the drug problem that ran all over New Orleans in the 1890s to 1900s this book fulfills not only a history of Charles but a history of South America after the Reconstruction period. The Carnival of Fury is written by William Ivy Hair as a nonfiction historical book. The title depicts a name for the shootings that the main character Robert Charles committed in response to a confrontation he had with police in which after being hit with a billet while trying to escape the incident he ran was shot at and returned fire. The main themes of this book cover a general history of right after the Reconstruction period in towns that are in Mississippi and Louisiana. Other themes revolve around a movement that wanted to bring blacks back to Africa. Overall this book is very good and addresses important issues that I will later go further into depth as I will the incident of the shooting and what could have happened. Most notable of these drugs would be Cocaine which was recently made in 1989. Now, these drugs where not illegal except that you had to have a prescription to get it. However, due to lax enforcement in New Orleans this drug was highly accessible due to the drug stores selling it to almost anyone. As a result of its cheap price a number of blacks where using it, and due to its overuse a number died. This was cheered among the white racists who gladly allowed this drug to roam the streets in hope it would kill off most of the blacks.
