These massive cruise ships are substantial contributors to climate change across the world and thus have become a controversial topic. Large scale climate change over the past century is primarily due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases from combusted fossil fuels. In a 2008 report, “Carnival stated that its ships, on average, release approximately ~712 kg of CO2 per voyage. Per passenger the amount of CO2 emitted is about 401 g or more than three times the amount of a passenger on a standard Boeing 747 jet,” (ARL, 2016). Carnival Corporation was aware of this issue and later released information that stated they had been successful in reducing their carbon footprint by approximately 20%. Furthermore, the company has made a $400 million investment in exhaust gas cleaning systems. This system would reduce the amount of sulfur compounds and particulate matter generated by their ships. Further measures were taken in reducing Carnival Corporation’s carbon footprint by enabling more of its fleet to connect to ports electrical grid instead of relying on the ship’s engine as a power
