Carnegie Mellon University Admission Essay

I would love to further my education at Carnegie Mellon University and study chemical engineering. Carnegie Mellon’s state of the art facilities, concentration on cutting-edge research, and location inside the jubilant city of Pittsburgh combine to make Carnegie my top choice for my upper level education.
Over the last summer, my family and I visited the university. We were blown away with the beauty of all of the buildings and the marvels of the high-tech facilities, in particular the computer science building. But with my prospective major being chemical engineering, I was anxious to see Doherty Hall. Immediately following the conclusion of our student-led campus tour, my family found itself scurrying rapidly back to Doherty eager to hear more about the chemical engineering program and the building itself. Upon entering the hall, we directed ourselves to the office of admissions. There we encountered an admissions officer who could not have been more helpful. She answered all of our questions and had a friendly and charismatic aura about her. Also, she supplied me with numerous journals and pamphlets describing the program as well as research projects that were currently being investigated or recently concluded.

The sense of self-pride is uncomparable. Because I am an avid sports fan and my favorite professional sports teams are the Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins, I believe I would fit right into this proud community. My family and I go to numerous Pirates’ games and watch the Steelers play every Sunday. I have a strong connection to the city because it is where my dad grew up. Throughout my life, he has instilled the love of the city into me as well. My grandparents still live in Pittsburgh, so my family visits the city frequently. It would be very comforting to attend a college where I know I will have some close family members nearby to function as a support

It is with great pleasure that I recommend Victoria Matus for her admission to college. She has been my chemistry student for two years. Victoria is curious and fearless scientifically, and is undaunted by topics that are difficult or about which she is initially uncertain. She approaches chemistry with maturity; she knows how to ask good and perceptive questions, and she knows where to go to start getting answers, whether they are found in the literature or they are obtained from her peers and/or teacher. I am most impressed by her confidence, resilience, and independence.…

Before addressing why Pitt is a good choice for me, I would like to review why I am a good choice for Pitt. The University of Pittsburgh values their “talented, diverse and high achieving students”, their “safe and healthy campuses”, their unique balance of “fun and camaraderie with internships and other learning opportunities outside the classroom”, and their focus on “developing students into global citizens” (University of Pittsburgh webpage, ‘Prospective Students’). I am a well-rounded student who places priority upon academics, as well as a broad array of performing arts extracurricular activities, over 300 hours of community service, several job experiences and religious organizations. Therefore, if admitted to The University of Pittsburgh, I would fit right in with the ardent and accomplished student body, just as I would benefit as a person and as…

    Siddhartha Vs Siddhartha

When I think of Columbia, I think of Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse because, just as Siddhartha experiences extremes before understanding the whole of existence, Columbians have their knowledge stretched between two polar opposites before realizing themselves. When I embarked upon reading Gateway to the Great Books, I learned that it was just the prelude of a project started in Columbia. However, unlike most schools with a strong humanities department, it’s also excellent in STEM subjects. In fact, it leads in patent research. With more professors and a team to work with, I want to investigate new technologies like I have previously done with my sister.…

Carnegie Mellon provides the perfect balance of academics, athletics, and culture that I am looking for in a university. From a young age, I was always fascinated with how machines worked. Instead of playing with toys, I would attempt to take them apart. In the fourth grade, we were given circuits to experiment with during our science lesson, which easily became my most enjoyable unit. Fast forward to eighth grade, I was introduced to a documentary in my science class which discussed innovative projects that will enhance the medical field’s technology.…

I am a person who believes that hard work gets you far in life. At fourteen years of age I was employed at the Papertown Dairy Bar, which I have worked at for almost four years. During these four years I have learned to balance my money, buying myself a car and keeping up with any bills that the car may bring. Working at the young age of fourteen and throughout my High School Career has taught me valuable lessons on time management on how to balance a working life, sports, academics and social life, which I would use to my full benefit while attending Penn State. My valuable time management skills would allow me just not to attend Penn State but to thrive at Penn State, immersing myself in organizations, schoolwide events, and my studies.…
