Carnaby Street History

Decent Essays
Located in Soho, Carnaby Street is a pedestrianised street filled with fashion and lifestyle retailers. The historical street was built in 1862 and underwent transformations over the centuries.
Once the first ‘Pesthouse’ for victims in London during The Great Plague, Carnaby redeveloped as a food market and slowly emerged as London’s iconic fashion and design hub and home to many London subcultures such as Mods, Skinheads, Punks, and New Romantics. Elizabeth Taylor, Paul McCartney, and Bridgett Bardot were among some of the iconic celebrities who made regular visits to the area. Since becoming a pedestrian street in 1973, Carnaby becomes one of the renowned shopping and dining centres in London.

On 09/07/2006 at 1011 hours, I was patrolling eastbound on Highway 10 at Ives Road. I observed a vehicle matching the description of one I know to be occupied by a wanted person and possibly involved in several thefts in the area. I observed the vehicle was parked on the side of the northbound lane, facing south. I then observed a white female I know to be suspect, Patti Jo Denoon, exit the passenger side of the vehicle and sit on a brick, speaking to several other persons. I knew P. Denoon to have an active Sherwood warrant and a Parole Violation warrant.…

The design elements in the three scenes by Serlio, tragic, comic and satiric that are relevant to contemporary street design in Western Canada would be its neighbourhoods and central business district. The neighbourhoods would relate to the comic stage, which involves private houses and apartments that occupy citizens such as average families, storeowners, professionals and others similar individuals in their homes and on their streets. The comic street view is lined with mixed-use buildings that portray a vibrant entertainment and residential district. The street is lined with buildings that would have café, restaurants, nightclubs and shops. These buildings are in human scale with apartments for families above them.…

Pyrmont is a suburb located in the inner city of Sydney. As made evident by the map above, Pyrmont is located to the South-West of the Sydney CBD (Central Business District). Not only is it connected to the CBD, but it is also a part of Darling Harbour, surrounded by a large part of Blackwattle Bay and adjacent Balmain East. Natural elements of Pyrmont are scarce, however both Darling Harbour and Blackwattle bay envelop the suburb. Blackwattle Bay is an example of immense urban renewal, ever since the Olympics occurred.…

Barnet’s city buildings all have an integral relation with public space. His Australian Museum has the expanse of Hyde Park; the Colonial Secretary’s Office, the empty site of the first Government House across the street to the west; Customs House its square facing the quay; the Lands Department, the broad Macquarie Street and the General Post Office, Martin Place. This pairing is demonstrative of the contribution of Barnet’s architecture to civic order and indicates that perhaps Barnet’s civic institutions play some role in creating the open space itself. In particular, journeying from Customs House, along Macquarie Street, passing the Lands Department and through to the General Post Office on Martin Place, one notices, a “sequential, even…

Living on Beacon Hill, Boston’s pinnacle neighborhood that brims with history and wealth, is a dream that is out of reach to many individuals due to the astronomically high real estate prices in the area. However, even if one were to have an unlimited budget to buy whatever home in Beacon Hill they desired, the limitless possibilities would make it hard for an individual to decide. If I had an unlimited budget, I would choose 94 Pinckney Street as my residence on Beacon Hill. The choice of 94 Pinckney Street would not be based off the interior of the residence, as the property has been extensively renovated causing it to lose its original touch, but because of its locality.…

One critique of gentrification is that it does not assimilate the lower class into the new middle class environment. Lee (2008) sights that there is a poor evidence base for 'positive gentrification’. She believes that although the new middle classes' desire for diversity and difference, they tend to self-segregate. “Gentrification is part of an aggressive, revanchist ideology designed to retake the inner city for the middle classes” (Lee, p.1, 2008). Lee highlights a major critic of gentrification, the displacement of the lower-class.…

Fashion has always been a clear marker for change in history. In the nineteenth century, many change occurred: new means of transportations, changing work environment and new societal demeanour could be observed in New York City. The advent of ready-made clothing brought the different classes closer to one another and this change in style reflected the changing mores of society concerning the place of women in the city. The growing industry, opening of shopping malls and the subsequent changing habits helped define the “new woman” as their position in society and toward the men shifted. For starters fashion had always been a means to show one’s status to others, with the apparition of shopping malls and the rising of ready-made clothing industry people could now purchase…

Like each place in the United Kingdom, City street in Cardiff is the place it is today because of the differences which identify it. I am going to take a look at some of these differences, for example, homeless, ethnicity, and disability and talk about how these influence individuals live on City street. I will begin by talking about the homeless and how that effects on the group, then to ethnicity and disability. One difference in City street is John Arthur's story in Connecting Lives (The Open University, 2014a) From one viewpoint, for example, liquor abuse, being taken into care, unemployed, in jail have prompted to a profound disengagement from society. Every one of these parts of John's life is connected.…

A disguised era of shame and hidden from society; this is London 1665. Then suddenly the theatre announces promiscuity, power and cuckolding to give their audience a profound idea of relationships. Women were subordinated by not having the freedom and intelligence to experience what men behold. The 16th century bursts out with a lack of control, meaning religious fundamentalists had the advantage of banning theatres. Until the mighty king slammed his way to authority.…
