Once the first ‘Pesthouse’ for victims in London during The Great Plague, Carnaby redeveloped as a food market and slowly emerged as London’s iconic fashion and design hub and home to many London subcultures such as Mods, Skinheads, Punks, and New Romantics. Elizabeth Taylor, Paul McCartney, and Bridgett Bardot were among some of the iconic celebrities who made regular visits to the area. Since becoming a pedestrian street in 1973, Carnaby becomes one of the renowned shopping and dining centres in London.
