Carmel Health Network (CHN) is a Christian, private, non-profit, 501(c) (3) corporation that provides access to primary healthcare for underprivileged children in the inner City of Mobile, Alabama and surrounding areas. Carmel Health Network has a multitude of ministries that empower, educate, enlighten, and inspire youth to attain goals that may appear challenging (Carmel Health Network Mission, n.d.). Carmel Health Network became involved with the patient case when the mother called the office requesting an unexcused absence notice for their child to return to school after missing three days and for a letter to take to the school board to reimbursed for taking the child to school due to his bus anxiety. “Children and teens admitted to this program reside in Mobile, Baldwin or Washington counties in South Alabama. They may have been abused, neglected and delinquent; exhibit emotional or behavioral problems; or have significant school-related issues” (Children’s Outpatient Services, 2015). This case was presented to the social work intern to follow-up on the patient to see if the mother is interested in homeschooling, enroll the patient at Learning Tree, and assist the mother with finding a job with Our Sister's Closet. According to the Learning Tree, they host several programs like Woody’s Song School which help children ages 5-21 with autism spectrum increase skills in language, socialization, and cognitive development behavior while decreasing behaviors that interfere with their learning abilities (Woody's Song School, n.d.). Our Sister's Closet mentors disadvantage women with counseling, resources, and coaching to assist clients with barriers that may hinder their abilities in job-seeking and job advancement success (Our Sister’s Closet, …show more content…
He attends W.C. Griggs Elementary School where he has been suspended several times for his outburst and aggressive behavior towards the students and faculty. NA lives with his single mother LA, who is 33 years old and has several medical conditions such as, eating disorder, hypertension, allergies, and shingles disease. LA has been charged with falsified food stamps fraud three years ago, lost her job at a bank, and placed on probation for eight years. During a telephone call with LA, she mentioned to the social work intern that she have to report to the probation officer monthly, pay $40 not to be put in jail, and pay the food stamp office $25 a month. LA stated, "I am working under the table at a daycare, but the director only calls when she needs me to come in. Scared that the utilities will get cut off and car repossessed. It is hard not having a steady job" (LA, personal communication, September 28, 2016). Also , LA stated that she have to attend an IEP meeting at NA’s school about him getting evaluated and report to truancy court for unexcused late and absences. The social work intern notices several relevant concerns in this case with NA’s delinquent behavior and LA not having a steady paying job.
