The shadow, defined in Myth and the Movies, is a character within a story that may represent qualities of a hero whom has been suppressed by his own darkness (Voytilla)(9). Charles Muntz plays the role of Carl’s shadow by being the only other adventurer to go to Paradise Falls and succumb to his inner darkness. When faced with the hard decision of saving Kevin, Carl first thinks only of his self-interest by choosing his house over Kevin. After his betrayal, Carl reads Ellie’s adventure book. He notices that she has left him a message: “Thanks for the adventure – now go have a new one.” This message triggers an epiphany for Carl.
