Carl left a major law firm to start his own practice and was the first NetworkSage attorney. He began his exploration focusing on his career network, naming each client and all of the attorneys and support staff who had joined the firm since its founding. It would be months before he’d return to explore his other networks because of what he learned in just twenty minutes, which is when he stopped to call me. In that short time, he realized he had the wrong business model. Seeing the size of his career network and all the people he managed showed him that he needed to make changes. This network has changed dramatically in the past several decades as women have entered the workforce, as workweeks and working years have expanded, as technology has changed the nature of work and as we’ve attempted to balance work other parts of life.
If you have come of age and are creating a career network, the strengths and weaknesses of all your other networks show up now in full force. All of your other networks matter now more than ever because every connection you have in any one of your other networks can help – or harm – your career prospects and career path. If people in your other networks have supported you well, you are prepared for your career path. You are healthy, well-educated and happily involved socially. You may also have a spirituality that infuses your work with meaning and helps you be resilient when times are tough. If other networks are supportive, your family, health providers, friends, neighborhood and religious congregation will make allowances for the demands of your job.
