Carlos Case Study

- Carlos is diagnosed with ADHD and has been receiving special education services since he was in second grade due to a learning disability that has heavily affected his reading skills. Carlos has an IQ of 105, which is in the average range. As of this moment, as a sixth grader, Carlos is at a third grade reading level. Carlos’ math skills for computation is at grade level, however when reasoning and problem solving are added to the mix, he falls behind. He enjoys and excels at geometry.
- Carlos also has three younger siblings, and lives with them and his mother. His mother works long hours, usually working two to three hours overtime. Carlos is responsible for making sure that he and his sisters are feed for dinner.
- Talking to Mr. Sosa (Carlos’ teacher), Carlos has good days on Tuesdays and Thursdays, because of gym being before lunch. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays Carlos has bad days, because gym is before class, and this is where Carlos starts to have behavior problems, which are an issue. These problems vary from refusing to do his work, and also destroying his work materials.

Mr. Sosa works his students from the minute the bell rings, Mr. Sosa constantly has to remind his students of classroom rules, on one of Carlos’ bad days (observed on a Monday), Carlos left class without permission, did not stay on task, and was eventually taken to ISS.
