In A Lesson Before Dying, Ernest J. Gaines shows the growing bond between frustrated school teacher Grant Wiggins and wrongfully convicted Jefferson on the journey to teach Jefferson to die with dignity before his execution. Through their interactions, both men learn about self-worth and the purpose of their existence in order to change the nature of society. Leo Rosten asserts “the purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” Rosten’s claims are correct because the objective of life is to be attentive to others in order to have a positive impact, and happiness is a byproduct of these actions.…

Studies concluded that humans are considered to be most knowledgeable being in this universe. If I were to compare humans to the pandas (labeled as the world’s slow-witted animal) for an intelligence competition, there is no doubt that humans will prove triumph. Apparently, Gladwell seems to enjoy replicating my previous example of comparing humans to panda. I am truly disappointed that Gladwell has successfully implemented the same concept towards his writing, “Small Changes.” Gladwell brought out the historic uprisings and compared to unworthy events, undermining the effects of social media.…

The short passage from the play Nothing Sacred by George F. Walker depicts a corrupt and misleading society in the reader’s mind. To begin with, serfdom creates a disjunction in the society where ‘serfs’ are considered a low class. For example, Arkady says, “This is a form of institutional punishment. One man has been given power by the state… the institution of serfdom,” (Walker). The Bailiff is allowed to enforce the law regardless of his violent personality, over a peasant such as Gregor due to his low-class status.…

“Teach Your Children Well” In “Group Minds”, noted novelist Doris Lessing argues that humanity is bound by conditioning to submit to the norms and expectations of the group that has the majority in almost any given situation; and that armed with this information we do not use it to improve our lives or institutions. As a solution to this dilemma, she proposes the need to educate the public, specifically children, about this propensity and to teach them the methods in which they may combat it. While I agree with her claim and solution in a very general sense, she failed to make her case. I found that be convincing, her article needs the added weight and gravitas of those who do indeed study the human condition and offer us insight in how…
