Carl Sandburg: A Brief Biography

Carl Sandburg was known for writing about and loving America. Mr. Sandburg was born in Galesburg, Illinois on January 6, 1878. His parents were August and Clara Johnson, who were immigrants from Sweden. August thought the name “Johnson” was a very common name in his railroad job, so he changed it to Sandburg. The Sandburg family was poor. Because of that he had to stop school 13 or (8th grade). Young Carl had some strange jobs. Such as driving the milk wagon, and laying bricks to dishwashing. When he was 17 he joined the military and was stationed in Puerto Rico.
Believe it or not Mr. Sandburg won a Grammy Award for best performance. His Grammy Award was for his recording of Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait with the New York Philharmonic.
