Author Carl Rogers was born on January 8th,1902, the fourth of his parents six children. Carl Rogers ‘s parents were described as strict religious and uncompromising yet caring in a non-affectionate way. As a child, Rogers was described as sensitive, bright, shy and an independent thinker. At the age of 12, Rogers moved to a farm outside of the greater Chicago area. At the age of 17, Rogers enrolled at the University of Wisconsin. Originally Rogers majored in Agriculture, but eventually switched majors to religion. This allowed Rogers to attend World Student Christian Federation Conf. in Beijing. This conference caused Rogers to question many of his religious views. At the age of 22, Rogers was married and attended the Union Theological Seminary in New York City. At the age of 24, Rogers began the progress to his Master’s Degree in Psychology at Columbia University. At the age of 26, Rogers graduated with his Master’s degree and began working for Rochester Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, just a year later, Rogers became the head of the Child Study Department. The first is congruence which is the act of being genuine. The encompasses the values of not hiding oneself, willing to risk self, and being natural or spontaneous. The next is unconditional positive regard. This step includes unconditional positive regard, assists clients in recognizing false aspects of self, which were the results of past experiences with conditions of worth, this is the state of being the Rogers believes that all therapist should strive to.
