Carl Rogers was born and raised in Oak Park, Illinois in 1902. His parents were Walter Rogers and Julia Crushing who were strictly religious with their six children. Carl’s original plan going into college was to study for agriculture at the University of Wisconsin- Madison. While in school he drifted away from agriculture and started to focus on religion. When he graduated he attended Liberal Protestant Seminary in New York City for two years. After he transferred to Columbia’s University Teachers College he received his masters and PhD in clinical psychology. Carl Rogers approach for Person Centered therapy is being used in education, cultural relations, nursing, interpersonal relations, etc. His theories were helpful for mental health and helped advertise humanism psychology. Every person is unique because of their personality they must find an environment that will help them grow and reach their goal of self-actualization. Each individual is made to be good, when a person redirects itself into a darker path is because they developed a poor self-image of themselves and/ or they are in a bad environment. This means a person is not congruent to their ideal-self and need to work to get closer to their ideal self in order to achieve self-actualization. Carl states that the most major event that will prevent you to reach self-actualization is childhood. Not everyone is capable of achieving self-actualization mainly because f an unhealthy childhood. Those who are able to self-actualize are considered to be a fully functioning
