Carl Lutz Research Paper

Holocaust was the genocide of Jews, by the Nazis during the World War II. Most Germans chose to not helping the Jews so they could be safe. Still, some people still stand out and help the Jews. A man named Carl Lutz is one of the rescuer, he saved about 62,000 Jews, which was the largest rescue operation of the 20th century. Carl Lutz was born in Walzenhausen, Switzerland, which was a municipality of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in Switzerland. After he studied in United State, he joined the Swiss diplomatic service. In 1926, Lutz was assigned to the chancellor at the Swiss Consulate in Philadelphia, United States. Then, he was assigned to the Swiss Consulate in St. Louis, and served from 1926 to 1934. In 1934, he was assigned as vice-consul to the Swiss Consulate General in Jaffa, in what was then Palestine. Appointed in 1942, he was the Swiss vice-consul. So many Jews hide inside of the safe house,"...about 3000 Hungarian Jews found refuge at the safe house and in the neighboring building."( Carl Lutz set up 76 safe house in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, and it was called the Swiss annex, in the book "The Dairy of Anne Frank", the families hide in an annex to aviod being catched by Nazis, "The three rooms of the top floor and a small attic space for our view" (Frances Geoforth, and Albert Hachett, 280). Carl Lutz worked very hardly for many month to prevent the planned death for the innocent people. Carl Lutz's wife Gertrud also help him ,"...working with his wife Gertrud, he was able to liberate Jews from deportation centers and death march."(Marian Hoimes).
