Adventure can be found almost anywhere. Whether it is from going on a road trip or just in daily life. Pixar Studios did a fantastic job of showing that adventure can be found in every aspect of one’s life in the movie Up (2009). In the film, Carl (voiced by Ed Asner) is faced with challenges that make him lose his yearn for adventure. Carl meets Russell (voiced by Jordan Nagai), who will help him on his next adventure. Throughout the film, one can see that these two characters have very different personalities. The goals of Carl and Russell are very different. In the beginning of the movie, Carl has his heart set on adventure. After the death of his wife Ellie, he is set on making it to Paradise Falls in South America. Carl is set on making it to South America to live out the dream that he and his late wife both had hoped for. Russell, however, has vastly different goals that he attends to reach. Since Russell is a Wilderness Explorer, he is trying to earn all his badges to be promoted to a senior Wilderness Explorer. But the only badge he is missing is his assisting the elderly badge. Russell’s goal throughout this movie is to assist Carl in some way, so in return, Carl can sign off on Russell’s paper, so he can finally be promoted. Carl and Russell’s personalities are very different, and this can be seen throughout the movie. In the movie review written by James Berardinelli, Carl is “a grumpy sort: set in his ways and not welcoming of strangers,” (Berardinelli). In the movie, Carl can be seen not wanting to receive help from the construction workers outside of his home and he also did not want help from Russell. In the review from the New York Times, Manohla Dargis writes, “Russell (Jordan Nagai), inadvertently hitches a ride with Carl, forcing the old man to assume increasingly grandfatherly duties.” Carl is willing to let Russell tag along, but he does not do so well with Russell about half way through the film. This is where Carl snaps, and yells at both Russell and Dug. This shows his personality as the stereotypical old cranky guy. Russell on the other hand has a much more optimistic personality. Russell is an eager, energetic child, who wants to help in any way that he could. He wanted to help Carl and then also help Kevin, a rare bird, get back to her family. Russell was constantly curious, which helped with the overall theme of the movie. He was wanting to know about what things were in Carl’s house, as well as when they finally reached their destination in Paradise Falls.
