Caritas Veritas Symposium Of The Good Life

Decent Essays
I attended one event in Caritas Veritas symposium called The Good Life and it was about reflections on being undocumented in the US. They were focusing on undocumented people are not that bad like what some people say about them in negative way. So, they brought the bright side of immigration and how immigrant people could be successful and fit into the American life. for example, there are many doctors and businessman in the US why were undocumented but that did not stop them from being good to their self, their family and other people. I learned from this symposium that I should not judge people about where they are from or how they look like, and don't judge the book by its cover.

Their success proves that a stereotype does not and should not define who people are or what they are capable of doing. By stereotyping groups of people, not just immigrants, it hurts society, limits the success of people, and undercuts motivation. In Spare Parts, one of the main stereotypes is found to be that all illegal or undocumented immigrants are inferior to white American citizens and insignificant to our society. Classifying all immigrants, specifically Hispanic immigrants, in Spare Parts, as not worthy or good enough, causes others to have preconceived notions about them. Instead of seeing these immigrants for who they are, they are judged by how they speak, the color of their skin, or just by the words of others.…

Many U.S. citizens believe that immigration is actually a negative influence on society. Some people see immigration as harmful to the American economy because they believe that these immigrants are taking away jobs from natives. This idea can be easily dismissed, as it is proven that even with the population at a far higher percentage (12 percent) of foreign-born Americans than in recent decades, the economy has still experienced a higher overall gross domestic product (GDP), higher GDP per person, higher productivity per person, and higher employment rates among Americans. Even if immigration is not the cause for this economic boom, it certainly should not be to blame for false perceptions of economic downfall. As far as social contributions, many traditional American citizens carry too much pride to admit that foreigners could have a positive influence on the society of the United States.…
