Carisa And Me Essay

Decent Essays
Comparing and contrasting the views expressed by Carisa and me in this week's discussion board will be the topic of this post. Carisa chose a quote by John D. Rockefeller: “Good management consists of showing average people how to do the work of superior people.” , while I pondered over a quote by Peter Drucker: Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things." Carisa had unique viewpoints about management, staff perceptions, and expectations.
Comparison
Although neither of us has been in an official managerial role Carisa and I have similar views on how the role would be best operationalized. Barriers to being able to manage in a way that is efficient and yet still be respected by staff are mounting every day.

Introduction Nursing is a profession within the health sector requiring inspiring role models and nurse leaders. Today's demanding healthcare society greatly challenges the Nursing boards and educational institutions to identify and develop capable nurse leaders. The description of leadership is very complex. Research conducted over the years concludes, no clear or constant definition or theory of leadership exists (Atsalos & Greenwood, 2001; Grossman & Valiga,2012; Mannix, Wilkes, & Daly, 2013, Josephine Scully N 2014). It is imperative that nursing professionals identify the leadership styles and theories relevant to their relevant practice.…

Summary of Workshop Our workshop on It’s Okay to Be the Boss by Bruce Tulgan, contained four scenarios concerning tardiness at work, overwhelming deadlines, slacking off on the job, and being overloaded with work assignment tasks. One scenario was acted out for each group of two “managers” for a total of four sets of managers. The scenarios allowed the “managers” to touch on any solution presented in the book in order to reach the best resolutions to handle problematic situations with employees. Settings like these were used to demonstrate how learning to solve one small performance problem can diffuse mediocrity and better managing people before they get out of hand in the workplace.…

In the world of management and leadership, there are more than a few books and resources available that claim to have the quick cure for management woes. Many of these books come highly recommended and many also come with the pretext of research and “empirical findings”. Most of these books however fail to effectively convey a message when they lack the clarity or simplicity needed to reach the masses. Convoluted and overly-difficult models are presented and the message is lost with useless semantics. The Three Signs of a Miserable Job (Lencioni, 2007) and Influencer (Grenny, Patterson, Maxfield, McMillan, & Switzler, 2013) stand apart however.…

Management 101, consisted of many stimulating and informative topics. However, learning the contrast of the X and Y management theories was exceedingly practical and most enjoyable in comparison to all the other topics discussed. This class thoroughly taught me the different perspectives and benefits of each theory and that they are undoubtedly are essential in building a strong and effective foundation in management. It will not only be a challenge, but an enjoyable task taking on the personal challenge of merging the benefits of both theories. For example, not only rewarding good performances, but also motivating employees to work on their own and empowering them to make independent decisions that they can be proud to be a part of.…

A quote that I found to be important from this section was, “Each member of the enterprise contributes something different, but they all must contribute toward a common goal. Their efforts must all pull in the same direction, and their contributions must fit together to produce a whole – without gaps, without friction, without unnecessary duplication of effort.” This quote is meaningful to management principles because it explains why managing people in a common direction is important to productivity. It means that all workers for a company have a common goal. Managers must produce an atmosphere in the work place that allows each person to contribute without making any on person’s contribution more important than another’s.…

This essay is focused on a period of my life between 2008 - 2011 that shaped my current management style and provides the basis for my personal and leadership development plans going forward. I will be reflecting on experiences that underpin the importance of understanding group and individual behaviour in a leadership context that will encompass references from material covered in module one such as “The Cultural Web (Johnson and Scholes), Shareholder vs Stakeholder Value (Milton Friedman) and The psychology of change management (Lawson and Price). The purpose of returning to these situations is to explore what I learned during that period, how it forms my current thinking and to critically analyse the impacts of these experiences as it relates to my current personal development plan.…

The term management can be and is often defined in different ways. (Daft, 2015) defined it as “the attainment of organizational goals in an effective and efficient manner through planning, leading, organizing and controlling the company’s resources”. From (Koontz, 1988)’s perspective, “Management is an art of getting things done through and with the people in formally organized groups. It is an art of creating an environment in which people can perform and individuals and can co-operate towards attainment of group goals”. However, these two explanations evidently show the way managers think and operate changes within a period of time.…

Introduction As I reflect on this course and the results of the Questionnaires, Reflection, and Action Worksheets I have learned many aspects of leadership. I have analyzed the definition of leadership and now have a clearer understanding of it. According to, Introduction to Leadership; concepts and practice, by Peter Northouse (2015), leadership can be composed of many variables such as relationship, trait, ability, skill, behavior, and influence process. He also elaborates on how the “leadership of an individual can be used to influence a group to accomplish a common goal”. In addition, he discusses how leadership is not the same as management (Northouse, 2015, pp. 3-7).…
