Caring for others is a central part of who I am. My love of helping people started when I was a little girl growing up with my autistic sister, Melissa. She has been an inspiration as a sister, and even though she is older, I take care of her, which has nurtured the compassionate qualities in me. My experience with my sister has shaped my desire to support people who face challenges and to seek out some great opportunities, so now I help my peers while being a part of my school’s tennis team, volunteering in school clubs, tutoring after school, and playing soccer with special needs students.
While on the tennis team I took on the role of being the mentor and advocate for the younger players. During practice, my teammates constantly asked me how to improve their tennis serves. They felt comfortable asking me for assistance, and I was pleased to share my tennis knowledge with them. I also made sure the girls felt like part of the team, made lasting friendships, and enjoyed their time.
I also am in several volunteering based clubs at my school. One club that is particularly important to me is Help the Handi. During my time in the club, I have assisted with the Special Olympics. I cheered for the swimmers that participated in the race, and guided them to the award ceremony. I felt like an essential part of the event, and am delighted to do it again.
