Caring for a Loved One with Dementia
What is Dementia? It is generally referred to as the deterioration of one’s mental ability that interferes with their daily life. The loss of memory is a very common example. However, a lot of people have memory loss problems. So, this doesn’t mean that all of them have Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Alzheimer’s is a well-known type of dementia. The role of a caregiver is very important when coping with dementia. Caregivers need to understand that caring for someone with dementia can be very challenging. “People with dementia from conditions such as Alzheimer’s and related diseases have a progressive biological brain disorder that makes it more and more difficult for them to remember things, think clearly, communicate with others, or take care of themselves (Family Caregiver Alliance, n.d.)”. Dementia can cause behavior problems, mood swings, and even change a person’s personality (Family Caregiver Alliance, n.d.). Five issues that are most important for caregivers to understand and address regarding the behavior of people with dementia include: accepting that you cannot change the person, addressing the behavioral issues with a doctor, behavior has a purpose, behavior is triggered, and what works today, may not work tomorrow. Interventions for dealing with a person who has behavioral issues due to dementia include:
