Caregiving Short Stories

We live in a selfish society where a majority of people only care about themselves, and feel no obligation to their family. We dismiss caregivers, never really truly realizing the level of difficulty of their labor. I don’t think we should feel obligated to take care of our elders, we should WANT to. These individuals paved a path for many generations, made many technological advances, and molded us into the people we are today, and at the very least we should want to provide them with the care they deserve and need.
I read two stories both about caregiving, both with their own struggles. The first was about Sherry Wray, a women with her own health issues who has taken it upon herself to take care of her elderly mother in her home. Sherry’s

Neither had the support they needed, and both were under immense amounts of stress. For Sherry, by reading her story I can tell she is a good person just wanting to give proper care for her mother. Her struggle health wise and financial, makes me very upset that there aren’t programs to assist family members who has taken on the role as caregivers. I cannot imagine being in the position she is in and still remaining as resilient. Though Eleanor’s story was very different in comparison to Sherry’s, I still felt sympathetic, she is doing her best to manage her own life, while still be a constant in her mothers. Her worries about the future, I can see as a common dilemma with many people who have taken on the role as a caregiver for loved …show more content…
I think it’s important to have a plan, while it may not go accordingly, it does give a sense of safety in having some sort of plan in place. My parents have a discussed living independently and also the possibility of living with one of us, they have already completed living wills, and my siblings and I myself have all discussed the roles each of us would play in caring for my parents when the time comes. Though, I know I would do all I can to handle everything myself, it’s nice to know that I won’t have to.

Lastly, I would like to discuss what could be done to help improve the options available to caregivers. I think we need to bring forward to our government the lack of support caregivers have from health care systems. Also, there is need for adequate training for those to become/are caregivers. Furthermore, some sort of financial assistance specified for caregivers.
In conclusion, as society we need to take better care of those who are in need of help. The two stories I read about Sherry and Eleanor, gave me a better insight of what it’s like to be a caregiver. I know when the time comes for my parents, having an established plan, we help with the process. While, we as society are helping, we also need help from our government to assist

As we age we start to worry about our family, specifically our parents. Who is going to take care of them, are they going to be able to stay at home, how much assistance are they going to need, is my sibling going to step in and help or am I going to be caring for them by myself? All of these questions can be overwhelming and cannot be answered until they actually happen. As we saw in Angels Preach a lot goes into caregiving and decision making for what is best for are loved one. In a review of the sociodemographic of the caregivers, it was found that the overwhelming majority of caregivers are females that live with their Alzheimer’s affected family member and 87% reside together in the familial home and provided an average of 11 hours of care per day (Raggi, Tasca, Panerai, Neri, & Ferri, 2015). The number of male caregivers has steadily risen since the 1970’s as women have entered the workforce and their income has become important to help support the family (Greene & Hunt, 2017). Female family members often view providing care as a familial role and because of this, they delay or do not seek formalized support until their burden has progressed to a point at which they cannot function properly as the primary caregiver…

Older Americans Act of 1965 The Older Americans act of 1965 (OAA) was formed in 1965 to assist the elderly.
